Likely có thể xuất hiện trong cấu trúc Be likely + to Verb hoặc It’s likely that + mệnh đề để chỉ điều gì đó có khả năng xảy ra.

Be likely to đi với động từ nguyên thể có to

ví dụ

Are parents who have a lot of money likely to spoil their children?

Be likely to thường được dùng để tạo ra sự so sánh với các từ như: as … as, more, (the) most, less và (the) least.

ví dụ

I think men are more likely to spend a lot of money on food than women are.

A: I liked Budapest as well.

B: Yeah. I’m probably less likely to go back there than to Prague.

Steve is as likely to get the job as Dora. They’re both very well qualified.

Kevin is (the) least likely to want to get married of all his friends.

2. It’s likely that

Cấu trúc It’s likely that + mệnh đề; động từ trong mệnh đề thường chia ở thì tương lai đơn để chỉ khả năng xảy ra của việc nào đó.

ví dụ

It’s likely that sales will rise.

It’s likely that more states will soon follow California’s lead.

Với nghĩa dường như, có vẻ như, cấu trúc It’s likely that + mệnh đề thường được dùng để viết lại câu có các cấu trúc tương đương, bao gồm: It seems that… = It appears that… = It looks as if… = It is likely that…

It seems that she was very depressed about failing the test.

= It appears that she was very depressed about failing the test.
= It is likely that she was very depressed about failing the test.
= It looks as if she was very depressed about failing the test. (Có vẻ như cô ấy rất buồn vì trượct kỳ thi)

= It seems that they’ve sent us the wrong information.
= It is likely that they’ve sent us the wrong information.
= It looks as if they’ve sent us the wrong information. (Có vẻ như họ đã gửi nhầm thông tin cho chúng ta)

It looks as if it’s going to rain again.

= It seems that it’s going to rain again.
= It appears that it’s going to rain again.
= It is likely that it’s going to rain again. (Nhìn có vẻ như trời lại sắp mưa)

It is likely that she’s very surprised at his amazing performance.

= It seems that she’s very surprised at his amazing performance.
= It appears that she’s very surprised at his amazing performance.
= It looks as if she’s very surprised at his amazing performance. (Có vẻ như cô ấy rất ngạc nhiên trước màn biểu diễn tuyệt vời của anh ta)

Lưu ý: Ta lập thể phủ định của be likely to Verb và It’s likely that bằng cách thêm not vào trước likely hoặc dùng unlikely. Unlikely mang tính trang trọng hơn so với not likely.

The government is very likely to propose changes to the income tax system soon.

I think it’s highly unlikely that she’ll get into university with the test scores she has.

Lưu ý: It is likely to (có thể, có khả năng) không tương đồng về nghĩa so với It is easy to (dễ dàng làm gì).
